And here we go. It’s the Lincoln Riley era now at Oklahoma, and the scrutiny and spotlight will be blinding.

The Sooners are supposed to blow away UTEP, and if they don’t, the panic sirens will go off with the showdown at Ohio State up next before diving into a not-that-bad start to the Big 12 season.

While no one is thinking the Miners could shock the world in Norman, they need to at least show up and not get destroyed. It’s hot seat time for head coach Sean Kugler, but he’ll still be around if the team is two wins better and goes bowling.

As long as the game is merely competitive for more than a half, UTEP will have done its job.

As long as the game is a 50-point blowout, Oklahoma will have done its job.

One Reason Why UTEP Will Win

While the Miners struggled defensively last season, this year’s version has just enough good parts to be a whole lot better around LB Alvin Jones along with a veteran secondary. That doesn’t mean the Oklahoma offense can’t roll at will like it’s supposed to, but considering all the new parts to the Sooner mix, the UTEP D should be more than just a speed bump.

Even for Oklahoma, losing Samaje Perine, Joe Mixon, and Dede Westbrook hurts.

One Reason Why Oklahoma Will Win

Score early, and this could and should be over.

The Sooner defense should be able to close down a seemingly punchless UTEP attack that has to throw to keep this interesting. Unfortunately for the Miners, the secondary is the early strength of the OU D and should come up with its share of big plays.

The Miner O line is okay, but the skill players aren’t there to keep up in any sort of fight. or to mount any kind of a comeback.

Best player: Left guard Will Hernandez is on many preseason All-America lists and for good reason. The 6-foot-3, 330-pound Las Vegas native has started 37 consecutive games at the spot since his redshirt freshman season. Last year, he helped pave the way for Aaron Jones to run for a school-record 1,773 yards.

The case for the Miners: There isn’t much of one to be made. Oklahoma has plenty of questions: Who will be its primary running back? Who will be its featured receivers? How will the defense adjust to the 4-3? But UTEP is 18-31 under four seasons under Sean Kugler and doesn’t appear to be making much of a step forward. So the case for the Miners rests not on UTEP’s side but on Oklahoma’s. If the Sooners’ proven commodity on offense — quarterback Baker Mayfield — is forced to leave the game, things could become dicey not only for this game but the season. If OU’s defense struggles to put pressure on quarterback Ryan Metz, things could be difficult as well.

The case for the Sooners: Just about everything else. About the only thing UTEP did well last season was move the ball on the ground, and it has to replace its all-time leading rusher.
